Q:I am looking at coming to Tasmania for a holiday with a view to buying property in the New Year possibly around Hobart (I am not sure of the suburbs/areas yet).

I would love to try and incorporate a bicycle ride while I am in Hobart so I am very interested in getting further information on your 'get togethers'. Do you have a website with photos. Do you need your own bike or can I hire one? I am only a novice ride so would this matter?.

A:Bicycle Tasmania is the States main cycling lobby group and we have a web site http://www.biketas.org.au which has some pictures.

Salamanca Cyclist Touring Club meets at Salamanca Square at 10.00 most Sunday mornings where we decide on the spot where to ride that day. The Last sunday in each month is nominally an 'easy ride', generally along the intercity cycleway (mostly flat terrain) for 16Km and return after a long lunch/coffee break. Occasionally we start rides from somewhere else in Hobart and to keep up with such changes you need to subscribe to the SCTC email newsletter. Contact Daniel Murphy and he will put you on to the email list. Novices are welcome anytime but most of the Salamanca groups rides cover 40-70Km on the Sunday so may be a bit taxing if you are not physically prepared. Probably best to meet the group on a easy ride, last Sunday in the month, then see how you feel about tackling some of the longer rides in the following weeks.

It is possible to hire bikes, for instance from Derwent Bike Hire at the Hobart end of the intercity cycleway, off Mc Villey pde at the Domain.
Chris MacGregor runs Derwent Bike Hire with touring bikes, equipped with front shock absorbers, front and rear racks and panniers, pumps, locks and tools, available for $125 for the first week and $100 per week thereafter or $15 per day.
