Q:i am looking to set up a trip for 3 or 4 couples to tandem Tasmania this coming winter or spring
preferably we'd like someone (?an outfitter) who could arrange a trip for us to include a sag wagon and lodging reservations and a driver (?guide)
do you have any leads for us to follow up?

A:I dont specifically know of any "outfitters" who operate here in Tas but there are a few leads you could try:

1/ They are based in New Zealand but Pedal Tours do organized trips in Tasmania. Look at
http://www.pedaltours.co.nz/

2/ Another long shot is http://www.io.com/~jmc12/australia.html Aussie Specialist Travel Agents

3/ Chris MacGregor who runs Derwent Bike Hire here in Hobart also does some escorted tours .Derwent Bike Hire for Touring bikes, equipped with front shock absorbers, front and rear racks and panniers, pumps, locks and tools, are also available for $125 for the first week and $100 per week thereafter or $15 per day. 6/ If you decide to go unsupported have a look at the Bicycle Tasmania website particularly http://www.biketas.org.au/BikeTas/giro.php
for a detailed description of a cycle tour around the state.
Tasmania is larger than many visitors think.
Riding just around the edge at 70Km a day and including a few rest days in interesting places takes a comfortable 21days.

For a two week visit then just the East Coast of Tas is a beautiful cycle tour.
Weather wise cold fronts from southerly directions with strong winds lasting a couple of days are possible any time of year.
The east coast is the most reliable and sheltered touring area in this regard.

Nowhere in Tas is very far from facilities.
The west coast is more isolated, hillier, and more likely to be cool and wet,
but camping areas or towns are not more than a days cycle apart.

7/ Island Cycle Tours (http://www.islandcycletours.com) are the only Tasmanian owned and operated tourism operator that is solely focused on cycling.
Their tours are run by the best guides with a passion for Tasmania, meaning you get the best local knowledge in true Tasmanian friendly spirit.
They offer a tour for everybody, from 3 hour mountain descents to 10 day tours for the serious cyclist.
