Q:I am a writer for Virgin Blue's in-flight magazine and I was hoping you might be able to help me.
I'm doing a very quick story on the best cycling tracks (ie scenic bike rides) in each capital city in Australia
and was hoping you might be able to tell me five of the best ones in Hobart -
just simple information like where it begins and ends, how long it is in kms and why it's good -
eg... Centennial Park in Sydney, starts near the SFS, 10 kms, ride through parks and ponds etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.
My deadline is unfortunately nearly upon me so my editor is right on my back!!
If you could manage this and email it back on this address I'd be very grateful.

A:
1. Hobart/ Glenorchy Intercity Cycleway.
A dedicated cycle path, shared with walkers.
Starts at the Domain, near the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, runs for 18Km on easy, flat terrain through Hobart's northern suburbs to Berridale.
Scenic river views, finishes near Moorilla winery.

2. Pipeline track.
(up to 24Km return).
Scenic bush track ride suitable for mountain bikes.
Starts at Ferntree 11Km from Hobart on the slopes below Mt Wellington.
Mostly easy grades on firetrails and singletrack through ferny glades and around steep sided valleys with spectacular mountain vistas.

3. Hobart to Richmond
colonial village, 30Km each way,
rolling terrain with one good hill.
Start at Montrose Bay on the Derwent River, 12Km north of Hobart.
Follow a path along the river bank by the Derwent Entertainment centre and across the Bowen Bridge.
Then on low traffic roads over Grasstree Hill to Richmond.
Thereabouts enjoy wineries, bakeries, Tasmania's oldest bridge.
Return by the same route.

4, Sandy Bay to Kingston.
Attractive beaches, sweeping river views, 18Km each way,
rolling terrain with one good hill.
Start at Sandy Bay on the Derwent River 2km south of Hobart.
Ride along the Channel Highway (a popular cycle route, even though it carries moderate motor traffic).
Follows a scenic riverside route through Taroona (cafe and historic Shot Tower) over Bonnet Hill to Kingston.
Turn left at the traffic lights in Kingston to go to the beach.

5. Hobart to Sandy Bay.
About 5Km each way.
Start Salamanca Square on the river (cafes, restaurants, bakeries, shopping).
Ride south around the waterfront, up a short hill to historic Battery Point
(quaint village squares and colonial cottages) then on to Sandy Bay.
Return by the same route or put your bikes on the ferry from the Wrest Point Hotel Casino wharf and cruise back to Hobart.

On patrol to find ways of making life better for ALL cyclists.
