More on Bikes on Buses in Queensland

The Brisbane City Council launched a 12-month trial of bike racks on buses in October 2002 (see original report under October 2002 Latest News - http://www.abc.dotars.gov.au/gnsoct02.htm#queensland). The trial, which has 3 routes and racks fitted to 37 buses has experienced a significant increase in usage among bicycle commuters with between 40 and 50 uses per week.

Feedback on the trial to date has been very positive. For example:

  • the racks have been used 1180 times since the start of the trial
  • the community approval is 87% (AC Nielsen telephone survey)
  • the user feedback (from the brochure) indicates 90% thought that if they used the bike racks, they would make fewer car trips. Also, 90% of users supported the extension of the trail to other bus routes (n=166).

There have been no injuries or incidents caused by the addition of the racks since the start of the trial. The Council is considering a roll-out program to follow on from the end of the trial. As a result of some initial confusion among commuters about what the racks were for Brisbane City Council has introduced signage on bike racks as illustrated in the photo below. While the signs are hard to see when the racks are in use its great advertising for when the racks are empty, and a rack with a bike or two in it is its own message.
