Bicycle lanes are becoming more common in Tasmania.
They are usually narrow lanes marked along the edge of a road,
indentified by signs and road markings along their length.
Bicycle lanes are for the use of bicycle riders and motorists should not be in them except in certain circumstances.
Motorists:
can drive -for up to 50 metres in a bicycle lane only if they are:
overtaking another vehicle that is indicating to turn right or making a U turn; or
crossing the bicycle lane to turn from or into another road or driveway; or to enter a traffic lane from the side of the road; or
parking in a permitted space adjacent to the bicycle lane;
must not park in a bicycle lane (unless permitted eg by a sign); and
must give way to bicycle riders who are using the bicycle lane.
