If they have to be mailed then I would expect to be reimbursed the cost of postage. Most of them are rustless (plated - silvery colour); a few are stainless steel. Most are from Germany – made by Berg or Prym. All have a right angle bend where they go through the flange of the hub. The lengths are listed here. I have not counted them, but “few” means not enough for a complete wheel, “lots” means enough for at least two wheels, and “more” is somewhat inbetween.

  • Volunteers Wanted at the Taste of Tasmania - Hobart City Council has invited Bicycle Tasmania to run a Valet Bicycle Parking Service at the Taste of Tasmania 28th Dec – 3rd Jan. Hobart City Council is to be congratulated in planning and approving for this service that compliments other actions the Council is involved in to encourage greater cycle use in the city. This initiative is also of course totally in tune with Bicycle Tasmania’s aims in promoting cycling for recreation and transport - what better way of combining those two uses than visiting the Taste of Tasmania by bike. Not only that but travelling by bike encourages you to be tempted by that second helping or extravagant dessert, as you know you are going to work it off on the way home. Please contact secretary@biketas.org.au if you can help. Please pass this on to every one who may be interested in helping staff or using the valet bicycle parking. More details are available here.

  • Tax benefits for bicycle commuters - in the USA but not here!
"The U.S. House of Representatives has passed landmark energy independence legislation that includes a provision to extend fringe benefits to bike commuters. The Commuter Benefit for bicyclists amends section 132(f) of the IRS code to include "bicycles" in the definition of covered transportation. Included in the Ways and Means energy bill is a benefit of $20 per month for employees who bike to work. That's a nice piece of change to add to gas savings and caloric expenditure. The legislation now moves to the Senate. More info at the League of American Bicyclists, http://www.bikeleague.org"

The Minister for Health and Ageing, The Hon Tony Abbott MP today launched the landmark document Cycling > Moving Australia Forward at Parliament House.

Minister Abbott was joined by Shadow Minister for Sport, Recreation and Health Promotion, and Shadow Minister for Local Government, Senator Kate Lundy and former editor of The Age, Michael Smith - each highlighting the tremendous potential of cycling to address key challenges facing Australia; soaring transport emissions, up 30% since 1990, as well as obesity, rising fuel costs and traffic congestion.

Tony Abbott also used the occasion to announce that the Commonwealth Government will provide funding of $30,000 to the Cycling Promotion Fund to do a scoping study on what sort of approaches will work in getting more people to get on their bikes with the objective of getting adults engaged in physical activity.

  • Dear Minister Cox,
Please find attached a letter(.pdf) outlining some of my concerns and suggestions about the proposed South Arm Road Upgrade and its severing of the existing cycleway at the proposed Oceana Road Junction.
I have circulated this to a number of other parilamentary members and local council members, because I do believe it is an important issue and it is getting nearly no debate. I think it is the accumulation of decisions like this which lead to us having a less healthy and connected society and I hope you can try and find some way to improve the vehicular infrastructure without it being at the cost of cycling infrastructure. Yours, John Dawson

The Trails Tasmania Strategy aims to develop, in partnership with the community and stakeholders, a strategy for the development and ongoing management of an integrated trails network in Tasmania. A Discussion Paper has been prepared based on the research and consultation undertaken so far – it indicates the key findings and also the possible strategies that can be taken. • * Issues facing trails in Tasmania
    • * Strategies for the future planning, development, maintenance and promotion of trails in Tasmania
    • * Criteria to assess future trail development proposals.
Anyway the link above will take you to the discussion paper and response form which you are encouraged to read through and respond to in the interest of supporting the development of new MTB and cycling trails throughout the state.

Responses to discussion paper need to be received by Fri 22nd June, which gives you about a week to tick the appropriate boxes on the response form (which can also be e-mailed in).

Written by Steve and Dan, two ordinary guys with the extraordinary ambition of cycling around Tasmania as close to the coast as possible on touring bikes, Circumcyclogation will touch on gear, routes, training, planning, advocacy and even cooking! (Could be an ABC TV show, Cooking on a Trangia. ;-) The blog is open to public comment and Bike Tas members (and cyclists generally) are welcome to drop by and give their advice or ask questions.

Circumcyclogation is called such because it's a journey around Tasmania by bike, not by boat ;-)

  • Today is World Environment Day.

US car & light truck fuel efficiency: in 1988 the average was 22.1 miles per gallon. Today the average is 20.8 mpg. The Model T Ford in 1908 managed 25 mpg. The Ford Expedition, one of the best-selling lines today, achieves 15.5 mpg. We don't need a technology breakthrough to achieve radically better fuel economy - we need to slow down and build lighter weight vehicles, or something even more radical (for some) - leave the car at home and get on your bike - it's easier than you think.

If you have never contemplated cycle commuting or have already swapped your car for a bicycle for a few of your work related journeys, the free booklet "It’s Easier Than You Think" will increase your knowledge of cycling.

  • Riders wanted for Salamanca 6 Hour Challenge BikeTas team being held on Sunday April 29th. The event entails building or adapting a human powered vehicle in the form of a recumbent trike and then completing as many laps as possible in the six hour time limit. The event is mainly aimed at High School or College students with local and interstate teams. Bicycle Tasmania entered a team in the community section in 2006 and ‘won’ our category but only because there was no competition- we were the only team in our category! This year there will be many community section teams. Bicycle Tasmania is aiming to enter another team this year and is seeking cyclists who wish to have a fantastic fun day out to make up team numbers. No experience is necessary; two of last year’s team had never even ridden a recumbent before the start of the race. Contact BikeTas for more details.
