  • Circumcyclogation is a new blog aimed at promoting cycle tourism in Tasmania by detailing the preparations two ordinary Tassy cyclists make to embark on an unsupported tour around Tassy.

Written by Steve and Dan, two ordinary guys with the extraordinary ambition of cycling around Tasmania as close to the coast as possible on touring bikes, Circumcyclogation will touch on gear, routes, training, planning, advocacy and even cooking! (Could be an ABC TV show, Cooking on a Trangia. ;-) The blog is open to public comment and Bike Tas members (and cyclists generally) are welcome to drop by and give their advice or ask questions.

Circumcyclogation is called such because it's a journey around Tasmania by bike, not by boat ;-)

    Circumcyclogator

  • Today is World Environment Day.

US car & light truck fuel efficiency: in 1988 the average was 22.1 miles per gallon. Today the average is 20.8 mpg. The Model T Ford in 1908 managed 25 mpg. The Ford Expedition, one of the best-selling lines today, achieves 15.5 mpg. We don't need a technology breakthrough to achieve radically better fuel economy - we need to slow down and build lighter weight vehicles, or something even more radical (for some) - leave the car at home and get on your bike - it's easier than you think.

If you have never contemplated cycle commuting or have already swapped your car for a bicycle for a few of your work related journeys, the free booklet "It’s Easier Than You Think" will increase your knowledge of cycling.

Check out Walters webs site and film night details at www.vanpraag.info/cofe1.

“My message is to tell the world that living with Cystic Fibrosis is not only possible, but that thanks to international research, people with Cystic Fibrosis are able to achieve feats just like any other healthy person,” explains Walter.

No experience is necessary; two of last year’s team had never even ridden a recumbent before the start of the race. Contact BikeTas for more details.

  • Hobart cycling advocate Kate Tamayo has been identified as the cyclist killed on Sunday after being struck from behind by a 63 year old male driver of a 1982 Landcruiser on Hobart's East Derwent Highway.

Kate was killed at about 2.30pm while riding north. The low winter sun would have been nearly directly in motorists eyes at that time/ direction, and this may have been a contributing factor. Although there are two lanes in each direction there is no sealed shoulder at that point on the road.

    Kate was

    • Bicycle Tasmania treasurer for 6 years
    • instigator of the very popular BikeWeek Tour de Femme event
    • RACT board member
    • Assistant Director, Budget Management Branch, Department of Treasury and Finance
    • president and Public Officer for WomensSport Tasmania
    • a tireless advocate for improved cycling conditions, and encouraging more women to get cycling in Tasmania
    • member Sandy Bay Hash Harriers Club
Kate will be sadly missed by all that knew her. If you ride on our roads, please do yourself a favor and read this leaflet for tips on being assertive and being seen on our roads.

Tim Stredwick has placed a bike painted white on the side of the road where Kate was killed as a permanent memorial.

  • Rear-Flashing Lights: Safety & Legal Considerations - an article from Duncan Hutchings - Gilshenan & Luton, Lawyers and Queensland Cyclist.

"A recent motor vehicle accident in which a Bicycle Queensland member was injured reinforces the need for cyclists to have properly functioning rear-facing flashing lights to prevent road accidents with cars and also to ensure full compensation in the case of negligence.

Tasmania's fine for not having a rear-flashing lamp is 5 penalty units $375.00 - see the Tasmanian law here. In summary:

    • (a) a flashing or steady white light that is clearly visible for at least 200 metres from the front of the bicycle;
    • (b) a flashing or steady red light that is clearly visible for at least 200 metres from the rear of the bicycle; and
    • (c) a red reflector that is clearly visible for at least 50 metres from the rear of the bicycle when light is projected onto it by a vehicle’s headlight on low-beam

  • "I like the bullbars, they're really good in accidents."

Read the full ABC Radio National transcript of The Cars that ate Cities.

Four wheel drives are an unstoppable phenomenon, protected by governments, they are the fastest growing class of passenger vehicle. Useful in the bush, they appeal to city dwellers who like the sense of power - and ignore fuel costs, pollution and safety concerns.

Who drives a 4 Wheel Drive? - "...They tend to be people who are insecure and vain, they're frequently nervous about their marriages, and uncomfortable about parenthood. They often lack confidence in their driving skills. Above all, they're apt to be self-centred and self-absorbed, with little interest in their neighbours or communities. No, that's not a cynic talking, that's the auto industrys own market researchers and executives..." - taken from the book "High and Mighty" by Keith Bradsher.
