Positive advocacy group Healthy Transport Hobart is putting on a car park celebration of bicycle transport this Saturday, 20th September 10am-12 noon. It's a trend the RACT wants to encourage and support, especially given the health and environmental benefits associated with cycling," Mr Goodman said. • Courteously Critical.

Whether the monthly critical mass rides that occur on the last Friday of every month in many cities around the world promote a positive cycling message or not is a debate cycle advocates love to discuss, endlessly! The contentious issues revolve around how law abiding the cyclists are, particularly the action of ‘corking’ which in effect obliges cyclist in the mass to cross a junction on a red lights. From critical mass to courteous mass is only a small change on paper but a large charge in attitude, one of encouraging a cooperative and considerate road space for us all to share. A courteous mass will undoubtedly become split at traffic lights and perhaps because a critical mass stays ‘en masse’ it does make a bigger statement. But lets be honest, to be courteous and considerate hurts or angers no one and arguably sends a far more positive cycling message to other road users.

So it was with courtesy in their minds that around 200 cyclists set off from Franklin Square Hobart, Friday 29 August for the inaugural Courtesy Mass. Read the rest of the article by Tim Stredwick.

  • 30-August-2008
  • Hobart's latest monthly Critical Mass Ride was a huge success - with around 200 cyclists taking part. It was covered by local TV and radio. It was attended by Premier David Bartlett, Liberal leader Will Hodgman, Greens leader Nick McKim, Hobart mayor Rob Valentine, Kingborough mayor Graham Bury, Hobart aldermen Bill Harvey and Helen Burnet (did we miss anyone?). To get the leader of each state political party to such an event is of world wide significance, possibly a world first, and has certainly has never happened before in Australia!! Congratulations must go to the hard working organisers Liam Correy and friends from a new advocacy group Healthy Transport Hobart. Read a pre-ride article and a post-ride article thanks to the Hobart Mercury newspaper.
  • 19-August-2008
  • Critical Mass Hobart is looking forward to a start in the light next Friday 29th August @ 5.30pm.

A big invitation to all cyclists of all backgrounds to get yourselves down to Franklin Square by 5.15 for free stuff or 5.30 for the start of the ride! The route will avoid fast flowing traffic, major intersections and be relatively flat and slow! Check out this Video to amp yourself up! It sounds like participants are going to be in for an amazing experience!

The health, environmental and financial benefits of cycling should be hard to ignore with the 100 cyclists expected to show up on the ride from Franklin Square to Salamanca Place! Opposition Leader Will Hodgman and Green's Hobart City Council Alderman, Bill Harvey, have promised to make an appearance on two wheels. Rumour has it that there will be free cyclist fuel, puncture repair kits and reflective vests. The rides unofficial police team have promised to ensure all road rules are followed and that the ride will take up only one lane.

    • election of executive and committee members
    • any important business that can’t be carried over to next meeting
    • order meals
    • half hour slide show of an epic journey from the Caribbean coast to Peru
Bicycle Tasmania membership has tripled in the last few years however our core band of committee members and helpers has remained much the same. Social rides range from quiet family rides along the intercity cycle way, overnight rides on quiet roads on Bruny Island, Easter weekends up at Deloraine, through to long distance rides - there is something for everyone!

    • Idling in traffic jams adds about 13 million tonnes of CO2 to Australia’s annual emissions. Off-peak commuting makes a difference.
    • Driving an average car produces 0.33 kg CO2 per km. Compare that to:
    • Hybrids or very efficient cars produce - 0.14kg CO2/km
    • Catching a bus - 0.008kg per person
    • Catching a train - 0.003kg per person

  • Cyclists should pay, says MP - BICYCLE riders should pay registration fees to help legitimise their place on the roads and pay for infrastructure and safety campaigns, says the Federal Opposition spokesman on sports, Pat Farmer. But... preliminary results from a study undertaken on behalf of the Department of Health and Ageing found cyclists saved more than $82 million in public health costs, almost $64 million in traffic congestion-related costs and $9 million in greenhouse gas-related costs. Read the article from the Sydney Morning Herald.

In a letter to the Mercury editor, Doug says "...no cyclists should pay rego fees - they don't cause any wear and tear on the road surface, don't use up parking space, don't cause traffic jams, don't pollute, don't require expensive imports of petrol or cars, don't kill people, they keep themselves fit, therefore lowering healthcare expenditure. Come to think of it, they should be paid". Doug also noted that pedestrians don't pay a pavement fee.

  • Spokes to GIVE AWAY from Treadlies @ Kingston - I will give some to anyone who can use them. Give me a ring on 6229 6701 or email me at rrlang@bigpond.net.au. If they have to be mailed then I would expect to be reimbursed the cost of postage. Most of them are rustless (plated - silvery colour); a few are stainless steel. Most are from Germany – made by Berg or Prym. All have a right angle bend where they go through the flange of the hub. The lengths are listed here. I have not counted them, but “few” means not enough for a complete wheel, “lots” means enough for at least two wheels, and “more” is somewhat inbetween.

  • Volunteers Wanted at the Taste of Tasmania - Hobart City Council has invited Bicycle Tasmania to run a Valet Bicycle Parking Service at the Taste of Tasmania 28th Dec – 3rd Jan. Hobart City Council is to be congratulated in planning and approving for this service that compliments other actions the Council is involved in to encourage greater cycle use in the city. This initiative is also of course totally in tune with Bicycle Tasmania’s aims in promoting cycling for recreation and transport - what better way of combining those two uses than visiting the Taste of Tasmania by bike. Not only that but travelling by bike encourages you to be tempted by that second helping or extravagant dessert, as you know you are going to work it off on the way home. Please contact secretary@biketas.org.au if you can help. Please pass this on to every one who may be interested in helping staff or using the valet bicycle parking. More details are available here.

  • Tax benefits for bicycle commuters - in the USA but not here!
"The U.S. House of Representatives has passed landmark energy independence legislation that includes a provision to extend fringe benefits to bike commuters. The Commuter Benefit for bicyclists amends section 132(f) of the IRS code to include "bicycles" in the definition of covered transportation. Included in the Ways and Means energy bill is a benefit of $20 per month for employees who bike to work. That's a nice piece of change to add to gas savings and caloric expenditure. The legislation now moves to the Senate. More info at the League of American Bicyclists, http://www.bikeleague.org"

  • Bipartisan Backing of Bicycle Boom
The Minister for Health and Ageing, The Hon Tony Abbott MP today launched the landmark document Cycling > Moving Australia Forward at Parliament House.

Minister Abbott was joined by Shadow Minister for Sport, Recreation and Health Promotion, and Shadow Minister for Local Government, Senator Kate Lundy and former editor of The Age, Michael Smith - each highlighting the tremendous potential of cycling to address key challenges facing Australia; soaring transport emissions, up 30% since 1990, as well as obesity, rising fuel costs and traffic congestion.

Tony Abbott also used the occasion to announce that the Commonwealth Government will provide funding of $30,000 to the Cycling Promotion Fund to do a scoping study on what sort of approaches will work in getting more people to get on their bikes with the objective of getting adults engaged in physical activity.

  • Following the last meeting of Kingborough BUG Mary Mc Partland from CyclingSouth and Rob Sheers surveyed the Channel Highway (Kingston to Taroona) with a view to making cycling safer on this popular cycle route. They basically looked at the feasibility of having adequate cycle lanes in both up hill directions over the Bonnet. See a draft of a report (pdf 1.0 Mb) Mary prepared (with a few additions from Rob).

Next some professional advice to determine what is actually possible or not would be greatly appreciated.

We look forward to discussions regarding this important project at the next KBUG meeting. Anyone is welcome to come along or contact CyclingSouth with comments or other input.

  • Dear Minister Cox,
Please find attached a letter(.pdf) outlining some of my concerns and suggestions about the proposed South Arm Road Upgrade and its severing of the existing cycleway at the proposed Oceana Road Junction.
I have circulated this to a number of other parilamentary members and local council members, because I do believe it is an important issue and it is getting nearly no debate. I think it is the accumulation of decisions like this which lead to us having a less healthy and connected society and I hope you can try and find some way to improve the vehicular infrastructure without it being at the cost of cycling infrastructure. Yours, John Dawson
