Tasmanian Mountain Bikes Inc.

The club was started back in 1997 by a group of mountain bike riders on the North West Coast. The Club name was changed from Northwest Mountain Bikes Inc. to Tasmanian Mountain Bikes Inc. (TasMTB) on the 2nd of March 2001 to bring it in line with the clubs strategic plan and to better cater for our now statewide membership. TasMTB only caters for mountain bikes and mountain bike riding and are affiliated with Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) and the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). TasMTB is actively involved in trail management, including being custodians of a section of the Tasmanian Trail. Tas MTB has a trained MTB Search Assistance Team that can be called on by the State Emergency Services. TasMTB are involved in organising and running of the Statewide Mountain Bike Racing Series which include XC and DH racing. Also we organise and run Statewide Mountain Bike Rogaine Series, 12 hour and 100k endurance events, overnight trips and fun bbq days where mountain bike polo is the call of the day.

Cycle Commuting "it's easier than you think"

Bicycle Tasmania is actively involved in encouraging cycle commuting. Why ride to work? well first of all, it's easier than you think and makes a lot of sense when you consider that it can be fun, saves money and provides regular moderate exercise. Bicycle Tasmania publishes a cycle commuting handbook "It’s Easier Than You Think" full of detailed information all aspects of utility cycling. Practical training is also available in the subjects covered in the handbook. These include, what type of bike to use, setting up for comfort and the selection of a suitable route, all aimed at making commuting as attractive, practical and efficient method of transport for every body. Employers benefit too by having a fitter, healthier and more productive workforce. Bicycle Tasmania provides advice as to how employers can become cycle friendly by provision of facilities in the workplace that encourage cycle commuting, such as secure cycle parking, showers and interest free bicycle loans. For information contact Bicycle Tasmania's "Ride to work co-ordinator".

Tasmanian HPV Enthusiast Club

Tasmanian HPV Enthusiast Club is a loose collection of people into the more unusual type of human powered vehicle, usually recumbent cycles. Members so far are concentrated in the South and the North West. Most home build to save the commercial purchase price (as it tends to be quite a bit more than "normal" bikes) and we'd be happy to help out others in this regard. For some reason Australians tend to prefer trikes to bikes and we are no exception. We also dabble in oddities like linear pedaling, power assist and even pedal powered boats. Basically anything goes- well kind of !!! We are also attempting to interest Tasmanian schools in a recumbent trike race (and building program) similar to ones held in other states and would love to here from any one interested in this. The HPV club has an excellent web site full of interesting home made HPV's.
