Have your say - Main Rd, Glenorchy
Glenorchy City Council have released for discussion a concept plan for their CBD makeover.
Good things in it for riders include:
- bike lanes in Peltro St to link to the Inter City Cycleway
- additional bike parking in the Main Rd precinct
- 40 kph speed limit on Main Rd.
There is a survey available for comments to be made: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LetsActivateGlenorchysCBD
Pictures and descriptions of the new infrastructure are built into the survey so just jump in. The survey will be open until 14 October. Bike savvy comments welcome!
Some ideas for comments:
I like the discouragement of parking, the narrowing of the crossings for pedestrians, the raising of the street intersection to make a safer more level crossing for pedestrians, the removal of the barriers, and the widening of the footpaths. All of these should decrease traffic numbers and speed, and make it easier and safer to ride my bike to visit the shops. The CBD stretch of the Main Rd will be more pedestrian-friendly.
It would be even better if there was specific provision for bikes, such as a separated bike lane on each side. There will be plenty of street width available with the removal of some on-street parking. These bike lanes could connect with the proposed bike lane along Peltro St to connect through to the Inter City Cycleway, improving safety for riders of all ages riding between the shops and sports activities.
If you would like to speak to someone about the project, the consultants Inspiring Place urban design team and Council staff will be available at a pop up information booth on the front of Council lawns on Tuesday 11th October from 12-2pm; Wednesday 12th October from 2:30-4:30pm; and Thursday 13th October between 12-2pm.
