Andrew reported that about 10 forms had been collected from city bike stores, BT members, family, friends, work colleagues, and was passing them onto DIER. 10 New business 10.1 Questionnaire For All Candidates In The Local Council Elections Barry – "Local government elections are coming up in October and I would like to propose that Biketas send questionnaires to candidates to find their support for cycling. The results could then be published on the website and wider media. If there are other organisations that would like to ask questions then perhaps they could be combined and sent together." Tim – "The idea has much merit in raising the profile of cycling amongst the candidates as well of course finding out specific information on their attitudes towards cycling. I cannot say at this stage whether BT should do this or not, I suggest you come along to our next monthly meeting, which is 21 July 5.30pm at the Environment Centre in Bathurst Street to discuss this further. It is unfortunately a fact of life that Bicycle Tasmania is a small organisation with an even smaller core of active members who contribute many hours of voluntary time. Our day-to-day workload does not often enable us to take on another issue or campaign without prioritising it against current activities. I would welcome your contribution and ideas for the topics we should be asking candidates and look forward to the opportunity to discuss this at the next meeting." David strongly supported Barry's idea and suggested BT could create questionnaire to be mailed to all council candidates. This would be average 20 candidates per electorate x 30 electorates = 600 letters x 45 cent stamp = $270 (not including any return postage). Andrew said BT budget did not allow for BT to pay for all the postage and needs to be funded by other means. Questionnaire form could be placed on BT web site, and candidates return their forms electronically to save postage; results could be collated and placed on BT web site, and announced in a press release. Nominations close 27th September and are announced shortly thereafter therefore letters would need to be sent as soon as possible after this. Barry said he was prepared to "chip in" $200 towards expenses. ACTION David: to approach Duncan Kerrs office regards funding for Questionnaire postage. ACTION David and Barry: to coordinate the Questionnaire effort. ACTION all members: to think up suitable questions for questionnaire for next meeting. 10.2 South Africa Conference David reported that conference being held next year (Andrew couldn't find any other details). 10.3 BFA Connecting Cycling Conference - Queensland David reported that BFA Connecting Cycling Conference will be held from Wednesday 5th to Saturday 8th October at City Hall, Brisbane, Queensland. 10.4 Letter to Parents of Louise Yaxley The meeting agreed it would be good to send a letter of support to the parents of seriously injured cyclist Louise Yaxley (hit by car while training for AIS in Germany).
