Ride Leader Skills Workshop

Have you heard about our Social Rides program?  Over its first two years of operation, the program has resulted in a good range of regular and occasional rides happening.  Riders of all abilities have been able to get together with friendly fellow riders, have fun and meet new people, on rides that suit their bikes, skills and interests.

Riders get details of our Social Rides via our Events webpage. Rides are promoted to members and supporters via our Facebook and Twitter channels, and also via a fortnightly email update to subscribers.

If you'd like to participate as a Social Ride Leader, we'd love to help you to develop the skills and confidence to do so.

Our next (and fourth) Ride Leader skills development workshop will be held on Sunday 21 January 2018.  This is a great opportunity to build your confidence as a ride organiser, able to lead a bunch of both old and new friends on small group rides of your choice.

Being a Social Ride Leader is a great way to:

  • Choose your own favourite rides, and enjoy some good company;
  • Invite likeminded people to join you on the occasional ride, maybe even build a regular riding bunch of your own;
  • Commit to a regular schedule of rides to build your own fitness, and make sure it happens(!) by inviting others along;
  • Contribute to building the riding community, helping others to build their own confidence on their bikes, and getting more people riding;
  • Show off the great rides in your area.

The workshop will be led by Di McHenry, a highly experienced and accreditted trainer, based in Launceston.  Successful participants will be accreditted as Bicycle Network Tasmania Ride Leaders.

It will be a mixture of information sharing and practical skills training, including practising on-bike skills and leading a group ride.

Where and When:  The workshop will be held at our office, at the Old Malthouse, 210 Collins St, Hobart, on Sunday 21 January.   Start time is 9am, and the workshop will run for 3 hours.  We may continue discussions over lunch afterwards!

Who:  The workshop is open to all experienced and enthusiastic riders, although please note that Bicycle Network members will be prioritised if numbers are tight. Previously accreditted ride leaders who want to brush up their skills are welcome.

Cost:  The course will be Free for members of Bicycle Network, there will be a $20 charge for non-members.

What you'll need: You will need to bring a bike (and a helmet), but if that is difficult let us know and we should be able to provide you with one for the day.

Register:  Register on the form at this link.

Email Di at dielliffe@bicyclenetwork.com.au with your contact details, the sorts of rides you would be interested in leading, whether or not you are a Bicycle Network member, and whether you'll need to borrow a bike and helmet.  We'll get back to you before the workshop with final details (and any updates).

More about Di McHenry:  Di taught Physical Education for many years.  She has completed the AustCycle Leaders Course and the Bicycle Education Instructor Training Course (Vic Roads).  She now delivers ride leader training under the business name: Di-cycles, creating a cycling culture!
