Wheely Great Parking
Using a grant from RACT’s Community Fund, Bicycle Tasmania is rolling out bike parking at community organisations to make it easier for people to ride and park. The first bike rack fits 6 cycles and is on a 6 month loan to the Hobart Women’s Health Centre in North Hobart for daily use by staff and visitors.
"So often I ride to an appointment or business and spend time looking for something suitable to lock my bike to" said Di Elliffe, President of Bicycle Tasmania. "You’d be surprised at how many places have nothing suitable for a bike lock and instead there are blank walls and car parking bays".
"We are delighted to partner with Bicycle Tasmania and RACT in this initiative", said Glynis Flower, CEO of the Hobart Women’s Health Centre.
"As a health promotion organisation, we try to give women many options for improving their health and wellbeing. With parking becoming a premium in North Hobart, we believe more and more of our patrons will choose to cycle to our activities and events".
“Bicycle Tasmania has installed these well designed racks discreetly, securely and safely in our courtyard. We are also pleased to accept the offer of workshops to women to encourage them to dust off and tune up their old bikes and learn the bets routes and safe ways to travel within the city".
The use of the rack will be monitored over the 6 months, after which time the Centre will decide whether to buy the racks to leave them there permanently or to have them move to another community organisation. Other organisations wanting more information about the racks can contact Bicycle Tasmania.
