"Mind your head!" at Hobart Airport
The runway at Hobart Airport will be extended, with funding assistance of $38 million from the Australian Government.
The runway will be extended:
– 150 metres to the north
– 350 metres to the south
The project will result in changes to traffic and access for the local community and business.
At the southern end, Surf Road will be closed off to cars and trucks, with a new road being built to enable these vehicles to access the Tasman Highway via the western side of the airport. The good news for bike riders is that a new shared pathway will be built a little south of the current Surf Road to provide continuous access for riders and pedestrians along the Seven Mile Beach frontage.
This would be a prime opportunity for Clarence Council to tie this section in with a well formed pathway along the whole of Surf Rd, to provide a safe connection from Seven Mile Beach village through to Pittwater - as per the Hobart Regional Arterial Bicycle Network Plan (2009).
A Preliminary Draft Major Development Plan has been released for community consultation.
