Cruisy camping tour on Bruny
Ahhh … the joy & simplicity of the cycle touring life … waking up & gazing out of the tent in beautiful places … always good for the soul.
And what can you say about Bruny Island? … a stunning island perfect for cycle touring. www.google.com/search?q=bruny+island+highlights
Trip outline: Meet at Ferry Café in Kettering for a cuppa before going across to the island. Leave cars in Kettering. Camps are planned at Adventure Bay, Cloudy Bay, near Cape Bruny Lighthouse and The Neck. There could be a rest day. This is an outline only, can change depending on group mood, weather and stray cosmic rays. Trip purpose is primarily to make sure everyone has a good time.
Trip pace cruisy. Philosophising, contemplation, photography & poetry readings encouraged. Being side-tracked by views, cafes, interesting people and stray animals always possible
There are some very nice cafes and eateries on Bruny. Dinners will mostly be cooked at camp, but depending on how the trip unfolds there could be a night of eating out.
Roads are a mix of gravel and black-top. Some sections of road can temporarily be busy depending on ferry times. We’ll try to stay out of the way when a wave of vehicles comes through. We’ll also cycle some distance on the beach and on easy single-track through the bush.
Hybrid bikes, touring bikes and mountain bikes with reasonably wide tyres (say 38mm+) and fairly low gearing are best suited for this ride.
Camping may include established camp sites, on private property and bush camping. Some camp fires are likely. Shopping opportunities are limited, maybe only on days 3 and 5. Everyone needs to be equipped for independent camping, bring sufficient food and be able to carry water for an overnight camp.
Enthusiastic newcomers to camping cycle touring are welcome. I’m happy to help with advice, can also help with some gear including racks, pannier bags and camping gear. We may also have a spare bike or two in the garage.
Daily distances around 35-50 km. Max group size 6-7.
Bruny Island ferry is $6 return for bicycles.
