Cycling Sunday 2015

Bike Rides and Bike Festival

Bicycle Network Tasmania is coordinating Cycling Sunday 2015 to celebrate Bike Week.

Cycling Sunday is a mass participation cycling event centred on Bellerive Boardwalk and experiencing the great cycling routes around Hobart's Eastern Shore.

On offer are road rides of 100, 60 and 20km length, and a family treasure hunt ride using the bike path around Bellerive Bluff for young children who are just beginning their cycling journey.

These are social rides, not races, and aim at encouraging riders to take on a challenge.

The rides will start and finish at Bellerive Boardwalk alongside picturesque Kangaroo Bay.  All rides will be supported with direction markers, sweeps, and checkpoints providing refreshments.

Century,   Two Thirds Century

Utilising the great riding roads around the Eastern Shore of Hobart, the Century and 2/3 Century rides provide a great challenge for all levels of road riders.

This is Tasmania, so the course is not flat, but it is picturesque and iconic.  Check out the Strava course profile for the Century and Two Thirds Century for an idea. Highlights are Grasstree Hill, riding in a bunch (two abreast) over the Richmond Bridge and the quiet Gellibrand and Rifle Range Road down at South Arm.

It will be a great day out in the saddle but you’ll also earn it.

Cost:  for above rides $15 members, $20 non-members

Register and pay online or on the day.

20Km Relaxed Ride

This ride is designed for inexperienced riders wanting a shorter distance and a relaxed ride.  It is also aimed at families with children older than 10 years of age.

Cost: gold coin donation

Clarence Family Ride / Treasure Hunt

This ride around Bellerive Bluff and Bellerive Beach will be run by the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation.  The ride allows children to go on a ride with an accompanying adult and look for treasure along the way.  A prize is offered for each child that stamps the map with all the “hidden” stamps.

Cost: gold coin donation

All rides will be supported with direction markers, sweeps, and checkpoints providing refreshments.  As the rides are not races, riders will be instructed to follow the road rules and only ride 2 abreast at all times.

Bicycle Network Tasmania will make every effort to ensure the ride is safe, however participants are advised to ensure they have insurance against accidents.  The best option is to become a financial member of Bicycle Network Tasmania,  which ensures you have excellent year-round cover against both Personal Injury and Third Party Personal/Property damage, whenever you are out on your bike.  Join here.

Similar to last year's Bike Festival, there will be a range of bike-focussed activities happening on the Bellerive Boardwalk.  These will include:

  • kids treasure hunt, organised by Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation
  • bike shop stalls
  • bike demonstrations
  • music
  • food

Further details will be advised.
