No Go on the Road to Nowhere
Cycle tourists visiting the west coast are advised that the Western Explorer Road is closed between Balfour and Corinna.
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources is aware that this is a significant closure for an important regional tourist route but advises that the damage caused by a recent landslip is so significant that its prolonged closure is unavoidable. The area has been assessed by geo-technical experts and their recommendation is that, given the size and nature of the slip, major rehabilitation work is required to make the road safe again for vehicles.
This will inconvenience many tourists. "In order to give travellers adequate forward notice for changes in their journey, detour points and signage have been established in the North, at Balfour and at the Southern end, at Corinna".
