PARK(ing) Day 2018
We're celebrating PARK(ing) Day this year!!! Come and join us.
PARK(ing) Day occurs worldwide on the 3rd Friday in September. The concept originated with one parklet installation in San Francisco by Rebar in 2005 and has since spread to over 160 cities across six continents! The basic premise is to re-purpose quickly and cheaply an on-street car space for other public use(s). Prior examples in Hobart have been from 2010-2013 at Inspiring Place (210 Collins Street), and Young Planners 2013 and 2015 (Elizabeth Street)
Places that are friendly to pedestrians and bike riders create more activity on the street, making them lively and encouraging people to linger longer, to relax, socialise and shop. The intervention aims to open up possibilities. Wider understanding of how street space could be used, through direct experience, has the potential to increase public participation in city planning and improve built outcomes.
Hobart's Young Planners group will be occupying a carparking space outside Fullers Bookshop on Collins Street to create a "parklet", an interesting space for people to sit, chat and have coffee. Bicycle Network Tasmania will be occupying the adjacent space to provide convenient bike parking for riders accessing the shops and businesses in Collins Street.
UTAS postgrad student Mary McNeill will be conducting a survey of passers-by and people using the parklet.
You're invited! Come along, park your bike, do some shopping, have a chat with Mary about the possibilities for improvement on Collins Street.
It's a good opportunity to share the burning issues on your mind, as her report will be going to the Hobart City Council for consideration. Tell her what better purpose you think that on-street car parking space could be put to!
