PARK(ing) Day 2019
We're celebrating PARK(ing) Day this year in Hobart, join in!
International PARK(ing) Day occurs worldwide on the 3rd Friday in September. This is a great opportunity to show people in Hobart how the massive public space that we offer up for on-street carparking could be used in better ways.
The creation of "parklets", interesting spaces for people to sit, chat and have coffee, opens up possibilities. Parklets create more activity on the street and encourage people to linger longer, to relax, socialise and shop. Wider understanding of how this valuable street space could be used can help us to imagine a safer, more people-focussed city.
Hobart's Tasmanian Young Planners group are coordinating a series of parklets along the Midtown block - Elizabeth Street between Melville and Patrick Street on PARK(ing) Day. Businesses along this strip will be occupying a carparking space to create their own "parklets". Bicycle Network Tasmania will be occupying one or more spaces to provide convenient bike parking and other services for riders accessing nearby shops and businesses.
UTAS postgrad student Mary McNeill will be collecting public life data on the day.
Get involved! If you live, shop or run a business along this stretch, contact Michael Haynes on firstname.lastname@example.org to sponsor a parklet space. And you're invited on the 20th! Come along, park your bike, do some shopping, meet some new neighbours in Midtown Hobart.
