A Connected Bicycle Network
Tasmanians will ride bicycles everyday for transport and recreation if they are provided with a high quality and connected network of bicycle facilities.
Education and Cultural Development
The education and cultural development activities associated with promoting bicycle riding will ensure it becomes valued as a normal and everyday activity for Tasmanians.
Supporting bicycle riding has substantial benefits to communities and to the politicians who represent them. Leadership in the allocation and sourcing of resources will allow facilities to be built.
Funding, Planning and Strategy
Funds and human resources need to be allocated, plans need to be invested in and strategic direction provided.
Bicycle Tasmania recognises that, whilst equity dictates that projects should occur in all areas of Tasmania, there are high value projects that can support far greater uptake of riding than others. Local, State and Federal Governments need to be clever about priorities!
State and Local Government need a real plan
We now have a Tasmanian Walking and Cycling for Active Transport Strategy. To create the connections that Tasmanians need in order to travel by bicycle, facilities need to be investigated and options explored, and a detailed works program is required to help turn plans for paths and bike lanes into a bicycle network. A Tasmanian Bicycle Riding Plan needs locations, lengths, proposed facility, what year that they will be built, what funding has been committed and what outside funding opportunities are available.
