What are the benefits of bike riding in moving people around in Tasmania?
Riding a bike offers many health benefits to Tasmanians. From increased cardiovascular fitness to a proven stress releaser, bike riding provides tangible health affects for our community.
We also can interact with people in our community whilst on a bike. Being out on your bike is good for the people around us as well. We are able to go cafes, shops and work but yet put one less car on the road.
There is an undeniable convenience factor that is discovered when riding a bike. Parking spaces are guaranteed no matter where you go. Traffic congestion is also irrelevant.
Lastly the cost savings for bike riders are very tangible, especially during a time of high unemployment for Tasmanians.
- What are your policies to encourage bike riding in Tasmania?
A Democratic Labour policy to encourage bike riding in Tasmania is that the, ‘Federal Government should provide sporting insurance to all amateur sport participants to cover injury insurance.’ Direct funding the insurance of sporting participants will allow for the registration fees for sporting clubs to be significantly reduced, allowing membership to be affordable.
This policy would encourage and allow for the establishment of cycling/bike riding clubs with inexpensive registration. Local cycling clubs can evolve and at community level, people can be encouraged to experience the benefits of cycling.

- How is the population motivated to use bicycles instead of cars? How will you promote cycling as an attractive form of transportation?
During these fiscally challenging times, voters of Denison are conscious of wanting to reduce their costs. Cycling has a small initial start-up cost but on an on-going basis it can provide savings to riders. The important thing is for government to ensure that it can provide the infrastructure to encourage cyclists to commute for work and leisure.
I would promote cycling as an attractive form of transportation through grants and or tax offsets to business that provide cycling infrastructure. Providing resources to allow business to build showers, cycling storage and or bike racks creates will encourage cyclists and allow the dismissal any barrier to riding to work.
- The most recent survey by the Australian Sports Commission indicated that men were two and a half times more likely to commute by bicycle than women. Why do you believe this is, and what is your strategy to encourage women to cycle?
Women, who are mothers, besides from undertaking paid work, typically also are responsible for the unpaid work of the school drop off and pick up. The uncertainty and potential danger of vehicle / bike interactions could discourage them from using a bike for transportation.
Long term designated cycling road infrastructure is required. If we can continue cyclists the use of roads, but without the concern of bike/vehicle interactions it will go some way to allowing everyone, including women to have less concern or hesitation about undertaking what is a great leisure and commuting experience.

Upon further reflection another suggestion to encourage cyclists would be to install bike racks on Metro buses.
Families may want to ride one way only.
Worker could be faced with inclement weather. Placing the bike on a rack on the front off the bus would allow workers to use public transport and get to work/home.
